Tiveden National Park

Tiveden, central Sweden · Örebro län

Tiveden offers rugged forest and rift-valley terrain between lakes Vänern and Vättern, with several entrances and hikes ranging from short outings to more demanding routes. Camping is tightly regulated inside the park.

Is Tiveden a good choice for a wild forest experience without travelling to the Swedish mountains?

Tiveden is a strong option for dramatic forest terrain in south-central Sweden. It has three entrances and a range of trails, but some routes are explicitly described as demanding. Camping is only allowed at designated sites and within specified hours, so plan your route and overnight stay in advance.

Forest terrain between Vänern and Vättern

Tiveden National Park lies between lakes Vänern and Vättern, on the border between the historical provinces of Västergötland and Närke. Its terrain includes rift valleys, large boulders and forest, with hikes of different lengths and difficulty.

Three entrances

The park has a main entrance, Vitsand and Ösjönäs. Driving is the simplest access according to the park, but local demand-responsive transport, cycling and walking routes can also be used.

Choose a trail that matches your ability

Not all Tiveden trails are equally difficult. Trollkyrkerundan, for example, is officially described as fairly long and demanding and partly crosses difficult terrain. Choose a route based on experience, weather and available time.

Camping is restricted

Tents, tarps and hammocks may only be used within designated areas at Käringaudden, Metesjön and Mellannäsudden. Current rules allow one overnight stay, with shelters set up between 18:00 and 10:00. Check current regulations before visiting.

Water and services

Accessible toilets and waste sorting are available at entrances, but the park states that there is no tested drinking-water supply. A hand-pump well exists at the main entrance, but the water is not tested. Carrying sufficient drinking water is therefore the safer planning assumption.
