Kayaking for beginners

A first kayaking trip should focus on control and safety rather than distance. The Swedish Canoe Federation recommends a properly fitted approved buoyancy aid, paddling with others, matching the trip to experience and conditions, and dressing for water temperature.

How can I start kayaking safely?

Begin in calm, manageable conditions, always wear an approved CE-marked buoyancy aid in the correct size and preferably paddle with others. Match the trip to your experience, weather and water temperature, and make sure someone knows your plan and expected return time.

Wind, waves, currents, water temperature and local hazards are dynamic. This guide does not replace training, local knowledge or a current risk assessment.

Keep the first trip simple

As a beginner, focus on becoming comfortable with the kayak, paddle, balance and basic entry and exit. Choose conditions where you can learn rather than chase distance.

Buoyancy aid and clothing

The Swedish Canoe Federation recommends always using an approved CE-marked buoyancy aid in the correct size. It also advises dressing for the water temperature and carrying spare clothing in waterproof storage.

Company and trip plan

Beginners are encouraged to paddle with others. Carry a mobile phone in a waterproof case and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Match the trip to the conditions

Weather, wind, waves, water temperature and personal skill all matter. If the conditions exceed your ability, choose a more sheltered location, a shorter route or another day.
