Ride horses in nature

Horse riding is covered by Sweden’s Right of Public Access, but a horse’s weight increases the risk of ground damage. Choose firm surfaces, avoid wet ground and check local rules for trails and protected areas.

How can I ride horses in nature with minimal ground impact?

Use paths and roads with firm surfaces and avoid cultivated fields, paddocks, young plantations and wet ground. For repeated use or larger groups, discuss the activity with the landowner or area manager.

Municipal rules, local trail restrictions and protected-area regulations can differ and must be checked locally.

Horse riding and the Right of Public Access

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency states that horse riding is included in the Right of Public Access, while noting the greater risk of ground damage.

Choose firm ground

Firm paths and roads are better choices than soft, wet or muddy ground, especially during wet seasons.

Avoid sensitive land

Take detours around fields, meadows, paddocks and young forest plantations.

Frequent and organised riding

Repeated use in the same place or larger groups create more impact. Dialogue, and sometimes agreements, with landowners may be needed.
